Background: Quynh had been promised to Odhiambo for a long time, but her family was nomadic, so she had never met him before their wedding. While traveling to her future husband's village, a very unfortunate accident happened where she accidentally got kicked in the face by a child during play. This left permanent damage where she could see, but was left with an extreme photosensitivity. Fearing that she'd be rejected, her parents said nothing about this in their letters to him, and asked that her older sister, Thanh, to stay in the new village as well, just in case she does get cast out. During the rest of the trip Quynh barely ate due to the fear and stress of what was going to happen.
The wedding was held at night, and she had her face covered by a veil the bulk of the ceremony. There was drinking and merriment so that the rest of the evening passed in a blur. By morning her family was gone, and she soon had to explain to Odhiambo what he ended up with.
To make herself useful she weaves baskets and blankets, wanting to help make an income so that her husband doesn't leave her. She fears he just puts up with her to be polite, not wanting to disrespect either family. Quynh wants very much to be worthy of him, and does her best every day to adjust to her new life.
